Hexagon Table Runners

A little over a year ago, my quilt guild had a workshop on making these hexagon table runners.

These are made from striped fabrics. This one is a beautiful red and silver gray print.

I didn't take any in progress photos, but these runners aren't complicated to make. Fabric is cut in strips parallel to the stripes in the fabric. Then wedges are cut from those strips with a 60 degree ruler.

You need 6 pieces from each strip with the identical placement of the strips.

Then each set of 6 pieces is sewn together. 60 degree wedges of coordinating fabric are sewn to join the wedges together. Matching the stripe lines is not difficult and the end result looks like an advanced sewing technique.

I finished them with either 5 or 3 hexagons per runner as the odd number seems to just look better.

Some fabrics are more interesting than others. This black, red and gray one above is pretty plain without the accent fabric wedge and borders.

But this print gave me all kinds of interesting pieces. This one was a little more difficult than the previous two as each piece in these needed to be identical, not just lined up along the striped lines.

All in all, these went together pretty fast and were pretty easy to quilt with lines that reflect the shape of the hexagons and the stripes.

Do you want more detailed instructions? I think I could make this into a tutorial if wanted?

Monday Mumblings

Good sunny Monday morning!
I have a huge list of things to get done this week and not sure if I'll actually get anywhere on that list, but blogging seems to be a good way to procrastinate!

American Banner from Moda Coasters - For Sale
Last week we took the RV out for a few days and I took along my sewing machine and a few projects. I've had so many big quilts that I've been working on, and it was a nice change to work on some smaller items and actually see a few finished.
Blue Table Runner - For Sale
This denim blue fabric line is great. I am going to find a pattern for a tiered skirt and get a little more of it and actually sew something for myself from it. Blue is still my fav color!
Blue Table Runner - For Sale
This cute double four patch table runner is an easy pattern to make up and you can make it from fat quarters in your stash or buy some specially just for this. Pattern is here or click on the Tutorial tab above!
Denim Blue Mug Rug - For Sale
And these mug rugs were made from the selvedge edges of the fabric - usually thrown in the garbage, but not this time!

These were quilt as you go, so when the top was done, so was the quilting! I have a whole tub of selvedges, so there will be plenty more of these in the coming weeks!

Piecefully yours!

Prepping for Christmas Craft Sales

Last year I made a list in the quiet times of the craft sales I participated in. This list was for things that people asked for when they looked at my table. Some wanted more country colours, some asked if I made coaster sets, and some looked, walked away, came back and left again without purchasing anything.
Country Greens Table Runner
I've expanded my table runner selection to include a number of country coloured quilts, made some coaster sets and still have a couple weeks to make a few more surprise items that will be new to Magpie Quilts.
This year I am going to be set up to accept Visa and Mastercard credit cards. I'm hoping that this will help purchasers who might otherwise not carry the amounts of cash for some of my larger quilts.
And I've been trying to increase my number of actual Christmas themed items - after all, these craft sales are meant for the Christmas market!

WIP Wednesday - April 3

It's Wednesday again! And the first one in April - I wonder what happened to March? We were just talking about whether it came in like a lion or a lamb!

So, here's what's been happening in my sewing room this week:

A matched pair of table runners
It's amazing how different they look even though they are both made of the same pattern and the same fabric line.

Quilted Table Runner - FOR SALE
The fabrics are all from Moda's Cinnamon Spice collection - beautiful fabrics!

I thought I had some in-progress photos, but they're not on my camera! Leave me a comment if you would like a tutorial for this one - and I'll make another just for you!

Canadian Content

I love this line of fabrics from Thimbleberries. It's called "Greetings from Canada" and I still find some now and then at local quilting shops and even Fabricland. I've made a few of these little quilted table toppers for hostess gifts when I've traveled and they fit easily in a suitcase if you're limited in your luggage space.
Canadian Friendship Stars - FOR SALE
Canadian Pinwheels - FOR SALE
There's probably enough scraps left for one more project and I think it will be a longer, skinnier table runner.

And I finished them off with my new labels from spoonflower.com. I made a label on Word, choosing my font and adding the magpie picture. When I had the size I wanted, I printed it out and then used my scanner to scan it into the correct format for uploading to Spoonflower.  I have a space for the name of the quilt and room after Calgary, AB for the year. It adds a nice finished touch to my quilted items and saves me time too!

Sometimes, I just want to go back and remake a quilt I've done before and this is one of those times. I had a bundle of muted green and...
